SCOTT CARNOCHAN TO become the next Headmaster of Holmewood House School in September 2017

Dear OSS I write to share with you the news that Scott Carnochan, Headmaster of Sedbergh Prep School, has been appointed to become the next Headmaster of Holmewood House School. Holmewood House was founded in 1945 and is a 3-13 Independent Boarding Prep School of 440 boys and girls. Scott’s appointment to this prestigious School in the South of England reflects his success at Sedbergh and is a signal of our own School’s strength. Scott’s leadership has been instrumental in the transformation of Sedbergh Prep School from a small School in modest facilities to one which can claim to be the...

OS PILGRIMGE TO THE SOMME – 19th-23rd SEPTEMBER 2016

Thirty-three Old Sedberghians were killed or died of wounds sustained whilst fighting on the Somme; one is buried in Harrogate, the other 32 are buried in France. The names of 12 appear on the Thiepval Memorial and 20 have identified graves. This year’s stage of The OS Pilgrimage was to honour this group of Old Sedberghians. With this objective, 23 of us assembled at London St Pancras Station on the morning of Monday 19th September in order to catch the 08:55 Eurostar train to Lille. Dr Bruce Cherry who was to be our guide (as he had been at Gallipoli...

OS Weekend 2016

It is Autumn, and as if the weather wasn’t enough to help you set your watch, it was also OS weekend. A timely reminder that I am getting older just when I have been doing lots of exercise in a hopelessly vain attempt to regain my youth. That and I am of course racing the Bursar, Peter Marshall, around the Wilson Run again in March in another thrilling victory of mind over matter, while our limbs creak and scare the sheep. But back to OS weekend and it was great to see so many old friends and make some...

Sedbergh School Grafton Morrish Finals 2016

Introduction The Grafton Morrish is an annual golf tournament contested by public schools from all over the UK (http://www.graftonmorrish.org.uk/). The format is scratch foursomes with each team fielding 3 pairs of former school members. Sedbergh have won the title on a number of occasions in the past, however sadly not for a good few years. I am delighted to say however, that there have been signs of a revival in both form and fortunes in recent years, with appearances in the final of the plate competition in 2010 and the quarterfinals of the main competition in 2011. Finals Report Before...

A biography has been written for each man, a pledge has been made to visit the grave or memorial for each Sedberghian casualty and a series of ongoing events have been planned to recognise the sacrifice made by a generation of...
