OS GOLF DAY

The annual OS golf day for those residing in the South (but indeed which is open to all OS golfers wherever they live) was held at Walton Heath Golf Club on 20th September 2016. Eighteen Sedberghians turned up to play in what is a very enjoyable and convivial event. In the morning we played for the OS Golf Society Challenge Cup, a stableford competition, followed by a fantastic lunch and a foursomes game in the afternoon.

The winner of the OSGC Challenge Cup was Robert Kendall who rolled back the years with a very impressive 73 gross for 42 stableford points, well done to him. Second place was Patrick Chapman and joint third were Jamie Edgar and Alastair Smith (Edgar was actually third on the count back but just so I could get my name in!). A three course lunch followed with a toast to Sedbergh School.

In the afternoon local members George Hamer and Miles Moffat romped to victory with 39 points, well done to them.

My thanks go to George Hamer in particular for helping to secure the day with Walton Heath GC, a really top club and course which we all very much enjoyed.

Next year the day will revert to Hankley Common Golf Club and the date is 19th September 2017 with similar format as the Walton Heath day. I very much encourage all Sedberghians of all golfing abilities to put this date in your diary and take part, after all it’s the taking part not the winning…..(Ed: is it?).

In addition, we have matches against Glenalmond, Ampleforth, Uppingham and Wellington (all at Royal Wimbledon GC) and a match against Loretto at Royal Ashdown Forest GC. Dates will be circulated early in 2017.

Membership of the OS golf society in the south costs £10 per year. If you wish to be a member please arrange for a payment of £10 in early January each year to the society bank account HSBC sort code 40 06 17, account 91212222

This annual subscription covers prizes and wine for the golf day which keeps the headline cost of the day down, together with a subsidy of 50% of the cost of the golf day for OS golfers who are aged 30 and under. This year the cost per player for 36 holes of golf plus the lunch was in the region of £125.

I very much hope that more OS golfers will play in the golf day in future, plus that the pool of players available for selection in matches against other schools will rise, it needs to!

Best wishes to all,

Alastair Smith
