Sedbergh has accepted an invitation from the Flanders RU (FFR) to commemorate FH Turner of Sedbergh and Scotland, who captained, along with Poulton of England, in the final home international in March 1913 played in Edinburgh. In honouring FH Turner, the Club will also be honouring the 58 members of the 1st XV who made the ultimate sacrifice, along with every Sedberghian who has pulled on the Brown Jersey and laid down his life in that War.

We will be hosted by the Armentieres Club and play two matches – a Level 5/6 and a Level 9 on the afternoon of Saturday 4th June. We travel by Eurostar on Friday 3rd at 11am from London St Pancras, and stay at the Ibis hotel in Lomme on the outskirts of Lille. We aim to have a training runout at the Club that afternoon, followed by a team supper in Armentieres.

On Saturday morning, we will visit FH Turner’s grave with consecrated soil from Winder, and arrive at the Club for a light lunch around 1pm. The matches will be followed by a reception at the Club, and then a Gala Dinner at a restaurant near our hotel. On Sunday there is an optional Morning Service at St George’s Chapel in Ypres where a special plaque to Sedbergh is on view, followed by the Menin Gate, some R & R/sightseeing and lunch before returning on the 15.30 Eurostar getting in to St Pancras at 16.05.

The Club hopes that you will be able to join this unique rugby tour, which honours the priceless sacrifice of our Sedberghian counterparts in the Great War exactly 100 years ago. The Club is looking for both players and supporters.

Dan Harrison, Stuart Oliver, Neil McKerrow, Simon Mulholland, Colin Gunning, Jon Richardson, Chris Mahon, and The Headmaster are but a few names that will be taking part in the tour. It will be a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and wear the Brown shirt again.

The cost for OSs under 30 is £125, and for over 30s is £250. This price is an all in cost with the exception of lunch on the days of travel. The Club is heavily subsidising all tickets, in particular the younger players, and we are sure you would agree that this represents great value for all.

Places are limited and are booking up fast. We currently have 50 OSs who have booked onto the trip, so if you are interested in being part of the tour please don’t delay and contact Benjamin Collins at bpc@sedberghschool.org who can reserve your place.
