Congratulations to barrister Robert Walton (P 86-91) of Landmark Chambers, who on 11th March was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He joins three other Old Sedberghians at the Planning and Environmental Bar, including John Litton (W 79-84), Christopher Boyle (S 81-88) and Alex Booth (H 88-93).
Congratulations to Taylor McGuire (E) who was recently crowned the 2019 National Fives Singles Champion in Rugby. The win was the perfect way to cap his Senior School career and was also his second victory in the National Fives Singles, having previously won the title in 2015 as well. OS Josh Hodge (P 10-18) and Bevan Rodd (E 11-18) and current pupils Will Haydon-Wood (P) and Tom Curtis (S) all featured in the England U19s 31-15 win over Wales on Sunday 7th April in Bridgend. Newcastle Falcons fullback Josh Hodge was instrumental in scoring a try and 11 points from the tee as he built on his try-scoring debut for the U20s in February. The development fixture was a continuation of England’s U18s programme which began with a three-game tour to South Africa, before U18s matches against Scotland and France earlier in March. Fly half Tom Curtis (S) also featured in two out of three of England U18s matches in the 2019 Six Nations Festival this month, where the side scored a 38-20 and 25-17 wins over Wales and Ireland respectively before losing the final game 40-19 to France on 21st April. Carwyn Tuipulotu (E) of the Scarlets Academy featured in all three of Wales’ games which was resulted in two losses and a win over Scotland.
Josh Hodge and Will Haydon-Wood were also part of the England U20 side that defeated South Africa 35-8 at Coventry’s Butts Park Arena on 26th April. Josh scored the first try of the match out on the left wing and later contributed with five successful conversions.
Abbie Scott (R 09-11) was among the key players as England emphatically reclaimed the women’s Six Nations title with a 80-0 win over Scotland at Twickenham Stadium on March 16th. The Red Roses ran in 12 tries in front of a record crowd for a women’s game of 13,278 to secure the title that France won last year. The full article from England Rugby can be found here.
“It was an amazing weekend and it was amazing to be part of it,” said 25-year-old Scott. “For most of the squad, it was their first Six Nations win because we are quite a young squad. I think the whole of the Six Nations, where they took us on the road from Doncaster down to Exeter and to finish at Twickenham in front of another record crowd, illustrates how much the game has grown. Welsh Prop Tomas Francis (W 05-08) has returned to his premiership leading English club Exeter after winning the Six Nations Grand Slam last month. This means he will still be eligible to play for his country despite extending his deal at Exeter Chiefs. Any player with fewer than 60 caps has to return to Wales when their contracts expire to remain eligible for Wales. As 40-cap Francis has had a clause enacted in his current deal rather than a new deal, the rule does not apply.
“We probably had some hints that there was going to be a potential issue arising with Wales,” Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter told BBC Sport. “Because of that we put various things in the contract that meant he’s not put in that awkward position where he’s turning down a contract in Wales, because effectively his contract’s just taken on the extension period.
“He’s enjoying being here, he’s playing some good rugby, he’s played in some huge games for us and has also had a huge Six Nations for Wales which is fantastic for him.” Click here for the full article from BBC Sport.
Cameron Mitchell (P 08-10), Myles Scott (W 07-09), Maxwell Davies (E 12-16) and Ben Rath (SH 09-11) all represented the Richmond F.C. 1st XV on Saturday 13th April in their Greene King IPA Championship League match against the Bedford Blues. Skipper Cameron Mitchell led by example and Ben Rath opened the scoring with an early try before the Blues found their form. Trailing 36-14 with just over twenty minutes to go, Richmond fought back with huge spirit but ultimately came up short to a convincing Blues side in what was a fierce and exciting match. Steve Hill, Richmond FC Director of Rugby, commented; “To comeback from 36-14 down at Bedford in the last fifteen minutes, having lost three players to injury, showed just how much spirit and desire this group of players possess. Archie Davies (P) has been named the Amateur Golfer of the Year for 2018 and Boys Order of Merit Champion at the 2018 Welsh Golf Awards last month. Archie has also been named in the initial squad of 26 players up for selection for this year’s GB & Ireland Walker Cup Team. Well done Archie!
Congratulations to Sarah Rowley (L 02-07) who has been offered a place at one of the leading conservatoires in the world – the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester – to study for a Masters in Vocal Performance. She is hoping to give a fundraising concert at Sedbergh School at a future date to help raise the funds required to support such a prestigious programme.
Sedgwick pupil Cameron Harris completed the London Marathon on 28th April for the charity MC-UK with a time of 4.26. He was running to raise money in support people of dealing with multiple sclerosis. At the time of writing he has reached 93% of his £2000 target – if you are able to help complete his fundraising target, please visit this link. Well done Cameron!
Congratulations to James Doherty (SH 03-05) and April Stobart (L 05-07) for completing the London Marathon on 28th April. The pair ran in aid of VICTA Children which empowers blind or partially sighted children and young people.
A big congratulations to Jonny Muirhead (P 85-92) who also completed this year’s London Marathon in a running time of 4:13:18. He ran as part of Team Guide Dog which raises money for Guide Dogs for the blind and visually impaired. He has managed to raise £5,500 so far for a charity particularly close to his heart due to his father, Colin Muirhead (P 59-63), being partially sighted. Jonny also plans to run the Great North Run on the 8th September in Newcastle on behalf of the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind).
