Cameron Harris (S 17-19) To Run 2020 London Marathon

After successfully completing the London Marathon last year, Cameron Harris (S 17-19) has again won a charity place for the 2020 London Marathon and will be raising money for the charity close to his heart, MS-UK. MS-UK provides support for people affected by multiple sclerosis, which is around 107,000 in the UK and 2.3 million people worldwide. In 2006, Cam’s mother was diagnosed with MS.

Although Cam recognises that he and his family have been lucky to have been provided with support and health care, he is all too aware that not everyone is as lucky as his family. When asked about his experience of last year’s London Marathon, which he finished in a time of 4:26:41, Cam said, “it is one of the best experiences I have ever done. When you are coming around and see the finish line it’s just the best feeling in the world. It was such an incredible experience last year I could not wait to put my name forward to run for MS-UK again. They are a fantastic team of dedicated people.”

Last year Cam raised some £2,500 and this year has a set £2000 fundraising target. Please click here for more information.

Andrew Murray (H 89-94) Completes The Bob Graham Round

Andrewmurray

Congratulations to Andrew Murray (pictured left) (H 89-94) who recently completed the gruelling 66-mile fell-running challenge on August 25th, along with friend, Josh Hickford, to raise money for charity.

The Bob Graham Round is a formidable 24-hour fell-running challenge of 42 of the highest peaks in the Lake District, over a distance of 66 miles with 27,000 ft of ascent (just under the height of Mount Everest).

On his fundraising page, Andrew describes the challenge as “probably part of my mid-life crisis, and for Josh, it is a journey of hope and recovery; so we are raising money for these charities which are bringing hope to the lives of disadvantaged young people in Africa, Myanmar (Burma) and the UK”. The three charities that Andrew and Josh have raised money for are WeSeeHope (Africa), Health&Hope (Myanmar) and Eikon (UK).

“Together, Josh and I hope to echo the resilience and tenacity shown by those who work for and benefit from these amazing charities, as we tackle the daunting challenge of the Bob Graham Round.”

At the time of writing, Andrew and Josh have managed to raise £4110, well over their initial target of £3,250. Well done to both!

Yorkshire First Team Debut for Year 13 Pupil Matthew Revis (W)

Revis

Year 13 pupil, Matthew Revis (W), made his debut for the Yorkshire first team in their County Championship fixture against Kent just two weeks into the start of this new academic year.

Off the back of Matthew’s success with the bat against Sussex in a second team match, scoring 177, the week before, he was announced in the first team squad by Yorkshire Coach, Andrew Gale. In a match of few highlights for Yorkshire, Revis took the catch off Patel’s bowling that got rid of Kent batsman Darren Stevens, who had scored a career best of 237. Revis showed great patience with the bat, frustrating Kent bowlers as Yorkshire were looking to chip away at the imposing total Kent had set them. It was ultimately too much for Yorkshire and Kent ran out winners by 433 runs.

The result may not have gone Yorkshire’s way, but it was still a match to remember for Matthew. “My personal highlight of it all was representing the county that I grew up in and had been aspired to play in ever since I started playing cricket. Not only that but making my debut at Headingley made it that much more special. The experience has definitely made me more motivated. Although it was very difficult and a huge challenge, I want to relive it all again.” Matthew said.

Revis, named Sedbergh Cricket captain for the upcoming season, is a product of the Yorkshire academy. Part of the Yorkshire Under-17 Championship winning side last season which also saw him play for England Young Lions against Bangladesh in July. Revis was also selected for the MCC side that took on an ESCA XI at Lord’s at the start of September. Revis had an impressive showing taking 3 wickets.

A key member of the 2018-2019 Sedbergh Cricket team, Revis finished the season as top run scorer, scoring 642 runs with an average of 58. This brilliant form with the bat helped Sedbergh through to the Under-18 National T20 final, where they unfortunately fell just short, losing by 12 runs to a talented Malvern College side. In the same competition, the Sedbergh Under-15’s managed to go one better, beating Whitgift School in the final by 10 runs. Click here for to read the original article.

Matthew’s incredible debut performance also won him the Howard Clayton Second XI Performance of the Year at the Yorkshire CCC Awards.

Former Irish Rugby Lock Mike McCarthy (SH 95-00) Speaks on Retirement and Charitable Work

In a recent interview with The Sports Chronicle, former Ireland, Leinster and Connacht lock, Mike McCarthy (SH 95-00), reflects on retirement, the mental challenges of the transition from professional rugby, the magic of Joe and how he’s using his experience to help other players.

“As professional rugby players, we’re goal-oriented, and that doesn’t just stop when your career is over. You need to work hard to keep perspective. The first year after retirement was challenging. I’d signed a two-year contract with Narbonne and was looking forward to playing in France. An elbow injury forced me into retirement. Not only was my opportunity in France gone, but I’d also played my last game for Leinster and Ireland and didn’t even know it at the time.

I was lucky to get to play to the age of 35. Other teammates and friends didn’t get to do that and were forced to retire even younger.  I’m also proud that I have a Challenge Cup, Zurich Premiership, Pro 14 and two 6 Nations medals at home.

It doesn’t make it any easier though. No matter what age you retire, it’s like walking off the edge of a cliff.

As a pro rugby player, you’re being told where to be, when to be there, what to wear, what to eat and drink. You’re being paid to be in the shape of your life. You get your travel booked for you. It’s not normal.

I still work in the game with the Rugby Players Association in England. My role is to work with the players to prepare them for their transition out of the game. We call it dual career; being the best you can be on and off the pitch. Its everything from education and courses to mentor programmes, networking and work placements, all geared towards life after rugby.

So, I’m still in the environment and using my learnings from the game for the benefit of current players. I can relate having played myself for so long.

Its great to be still involved within the game and give something back.

I’ll always miss playing though!”

Becky Glen (R 07-12) Features in Scotland Team During T20 World Cup Qualifying

Becky Glen (R 07-12) was again in action for the Scotland Wildcats as the hosts were looking to make history by qualifying for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier Competition for the first time. The squad was unfortunately knocked out of the 8-strong competition which was held in Dundee and Arbroath. Scotland finished 3rd in their group a promising opening win over the USA but two later losses to Papua New Guinea and Bangladesh ended their chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup. The team however bounced back in the playoffs with a 10-wicket win over Namibia and then ended on a high with a clinical 70-run win over the Netherlands in the 5th/6th playoff match.
