OS SUPPORT NEEDED WITH CAREER INTERNSHIPS AND CAREER ADVICE

The new Careers department was launched this September with a focus on setting up a programme that drives every pupil forward towards the absolutely right decision on where the next stage in their life will be. Pupils will be helped to identify the skills and qualifications needed to achieve their career goals and will be supported through mentoring, internship placements and work placements. The Careers Department and the OS Club will be working closer than ever before in the new look department ensuring current Sedberghians and Old Sedberghians receive the best possible advice and support.

Sedbergh has an unrivalled reputation for preparing young people for the outside world. They are resilient and courageous, polite and courteous, well rounded and confident. At Sedbergh, boys and girls grow into young men and women who will forge friendships for life and establish a network of contacts that will serve them well.

What makes Sedbergh so special can be seen in the pride and sense of belonging that Old Sedberghians have for the School; their willingness to give something back is unparalleled.
Our belief is that current pupils deserve an equally unrivalled level of support and guidance to ensure that they are in the best position to choose their next step in life.

With this in mind, we are asking for OS help in developing two new initiatives:
1. OS Careers Talks: We are developing a programme of talks for our Year 11 to 13 pupils on the variety of careers that are available for them. This will be an informal talk over lunch with the opportunity for questions and answers at the end. All current year 11 and 12 pupils have one-to-one careers interviews and, as a result of this, individual pupils will be targeted for specific talks. It is anticipated that there will be no more than 30 pupils at each talk. Our intention is for these to run on Thursday lunchtimes starting in the Lent Term 2018.
2. OS Internships: From January 2018 we intend to advertise OS internships to our current Year 12, and Year 13 pupils as well as any relevant OSs. We are presently producing a brochure which we hope will contain approximately 30-40 profiles of OSs who are willing to offer an internship for Summer 2018. The internship could be anything from 2 weeks to a year depending on what is right for each company. There will be a formal application process with either face-to-face or Skype interviews in order to ensure that we obtain the best fit for the specific company. This process will also help the individuals gain valuable interview and assessment skills.

Finally, we are running our Annual Careers Fair on Thursday 15 March 2018 and invite any OSs to attend who wish to be present. Your involvement can take a variety of forms, from a short presentation, a seminar, to a stall in Powell Hall advertising your company.

If you feel that this is something that you feel that you could help with please contact Ben Collins at bpc@sedberghschool.org.
