SECOND QUIZ NIGHT SUCCESS!

Quiznighttworeview

Back by popular demand, on Thursday 4th February the OS Club presented the Second Sedbergh Global Quiz Night via Zoom and this time we were delighted to be joined by more than twice as many guests as the First Quiz Night!

Over 500 guests comprising OS, current and former parents and staff, pupils and friends of the School dialled in to join us on a virtual journey around the world from countries such as the USA, Canada, Kenya, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, the UAE, Australia, and New Zealand to name but a few!

Chairman and host Jan van der Velde (L 77-82) conversed with a range of interesting speakers including a survivor of the 2009 ‘Miracle on the Hudson’, Lori Lightner, who gave a fascinating and inspiring recount of her incredible tale of survival, describing what it was like to be on a plane with both engines shut down, landing in the freezing waters of the Hudson River, and being rescued after the emergency plane landing made by Captain Sully. This was followed by similar amazing and inspiring stories and experiences shared by Sedberghians young and old and from a wide range of careers and walks of life- from a literary agent and writing instructor of numerous bestselling authors, to a Rugby World Cup Winner and an aspiring young and talented architect.

We received good comments about every single speaker. The OS Club would again like to thank each of the guest speakers for their time and for sharing their interesting stories with the OS community.

Amongst all the discussion, over 200 players put their general knowledge skills to the test in the quiz, this time the runners up from the first quiz, Sedgwick House, claimed a thoroughly convincing win in the House contest! Please see the top 5 results below from the main categories:

We were also delighted to receive many messages of positive feedback. One person rang to say that he and his wife were so impressed by the way the younger OS came across, (James Botham, Maria Mendoza, and Georgina Boyd-Moss), that they have decided to find the funds to ensure their grandson stays in private education in secondary school. Meanwhile, the elderly neighbour of an OS became so engrossed in the proceedings that she has asked to be kept well-informed of the next one. Indeed, a number of people said they were transfixed by the whole evening and felt uplifted.

A new parent of a pupil who said it has been difficult to establish a relationship with the School because of the lockdown, said that the Quiz Night made her feel connected. A widow of a deceased OS said that she finally understood what Sedbergh is about. A number of non-OS also described how fascinated they were by the depth and spread of speakers, and how to some of them, it was a world to which they can only aspire to.

The OS Club also received many messages of congratulations from Old Sedberghians. Once again, we would like to thank everyone for their support and we look forward to seeing you again soon for the next one!
